The Rotterdam Convention was lately implemented at European level by the Regulation (EC) No 689 of 17 June 2008 concerning the export and import of hazardous chemicals which extended the list of chemicals subject to export notification with respect to the annexed chemicals of the Rotterdam Convention. The Regulation 689/2008/EC and the Rotterdam Convention are constantly evolving due to the fact that each Party that has adopted a final regulatory action to ban or severely restrict a chemical shall notify the Secretariat in writing of such action for addition in annex III of the Convention. In the European Union such final regulatory actions encompass e.g. the restrictions on the manufacturing, placing on the market and use of certain dangerous substances, mixtures and articles or substances subject to authorisation according to REACH regulation or restrictions introduced by the Regulation on biocides (528/2012/EU). Some substances export is banned according to the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants, which has not been ratified by Italian Government! Starting from 1 March 2014 the Regulation 689/2008/EC will be repealed by the Regulation (EU) No 649 of 4 July 2012.
